De-animate animated GIFs
Some profile pictures are animated GIFs. It's really distracting to have them flashing and spinning on the side of my gmail window.

Hi Keith, good idea, thanks — I can imagine that an animation would be really annoying! We’ll have to look into this to see what we can do.
In the meantime, can you just discourage your contacts from using animated GIFs? :)

I like having the animated gifs because it's very useful to know that the person I'm dealing with is an idiot.

At least in my case, the problem comes from random people on mailing lists, not my personal contacts.
