Use Facebook Connect to get information from private friends in Rapportive
I have a good number of friends whose email addresses link to a Facebook account that is set to private. However, if Rapportive utilized Facebook Connect, it could pull that Facebook information into my notes.
Hello everyone, we just added support for this today — we even got press coverage :) http://mashable.com/2011/02/02/rapportive-facebook-integration/
Thanks for being patient.

I originally denied Rapportive access to my Facebook account. Now I see that I can't see any other people's data via Rapportive. Is this because of that choice? If so, how to I change that setting to allow for Rapportive to have access?

Hi Joris,
This is probably because of your friends' Facebook privacy settings — we have to respect their choices when it comes to what they've allowed and disallowed.
Thanks for getting in touch!

Matching contacts with facebook doesn't work here (chrome) I got emails from facebook contacts,
If I search on facebook for the email, it finds the person, rapportive doesn't :( -

Hi Igo,
I've just investigated this — it turns out that Facebook are redirecting you from https to http (I don't know why they do this). So the flow is https://rapportive.com -> https://facebook.com -> http://facebook.com -> https://rapportive.com.
This is still secure enough for OAuth2 (as the first and last arrows end with https), but it is very unsettling, I agree.

Please use secure https when authenticating with Facebook. At this moment it uses http

Hi Jered, thanks for checking back. We've got our Facebook integration almost ready to go, but during the private beta we found some bugs that we want to fix before rolling it out to everybody. But it should just be a matter of days now :)

Martin, you said this was starting roll out about 2 months ago. Do you have a status update on this?

How can I get this hooked up? I see you said about a month ago you were rolling it out; I just installed in this week, but no Facebook connect option I can find? Thanks.

Tom01, thanks for your feedback. We are actually in the process of rolling out Facebook connect at the moment, but it will always be your choice as to whether you want to connect Rapportive to Facebook.

Please *don't* connect it with Facebook. Culling information from Facebook is enough; providing a potential conduit between GMail and Facebook would make Rapportive an unacceptable privacy risk.

Facebook allows searching an email to find its corresponding profile; so why not request users to authorise rapportive's use of facebook api? People would get right on their inbox whatever information they could find themselves by looking up the sender's email on facebook.

Many social networks have APIs, and many use OAuth (in fact Facebook use OAuth too). However, the APIs of different sites are quite different, so it's a fair bit of work to support each site. We've got some good stuff in the works though... :)

Use OpenID and OAuth instead of Facebook connect where possible. That will allow you to aggregate from more social networks.

This is a great idea. Not sure if there's which social networks allow similar APIs (Foursquare, LinkedIn), but very useful idea!
